Decking builds and renovations can seem overwhelming at first, but if you identify the most important supplies before you get started, you are well on your way to having a more organized project. Take a look below at five essential supplies that you need to purchase if you haven't already.
Deck Boards
Before anything else, you should identify the type of boards you will be using. Most decks are made of wood, composite, or PVC. Real wood is more expensive but can last a long time if taken care of properly. Composite materials can also look great, even if you're on a tight budget.
Stairs and Railings
Virtually every deck has stairs, and each set of stairs requires multiple components. These include stringers, risers, and treads, which form the diagonal, vertical, and horizontal support boards respectively. Not every deck has railings, but if you are planning to include some in yours, then you will also want to think about the kinds of posts and balusters that would look best with the rest of your boards. A mismatch in the type of material you are using can alter the aesthetic of the deck and ruin what is otherwise a great project.
Joists and Ledgers
Of course, a deck cannot simply float above a yard or patio. The deck boards must be directly supported by beams that are even stronger, and that will last for years to come. The horizontal beams that provide support are called joists, while the larger board that is attached to the house is called the ledger. Without joists and ledgers, the decking boards cannot be put into place, so it is crucial that you choose the ones you think are best as soon as possible.
Post Anchors
Along with the materials mentioned above, post anchors essentially complete the deck frame. Post anchors secure posts into the ground or into footings, which are concrete blocks that provide a good foundation. Post anchors themselves are commonly seen in concrete or metal versions.
Screws and Nails
Deck boards, stairs, and ledgers cannot be securely joined unless you have a sizeable amount of screws or nails. That said, while the type of fastener may not seem like it makes much of a difference, you should always opt for stainless steel ones over other types. Stainless steel is able to resist corrosion more effectively and will make for less frequent repairs in the future.
