When people talk about using wood in building a building, projects, or any other use, they don't always specify whether they mean hardwood or softwood. There is a difference between the two types of wood. The distinction between hardwood and softwood doesn't include how hard the wood is. For example, balsa wood, which is the lightest and softest wood available is classified as hardwood. Yew, which is a very hard and dense wood is classified as softwood. There are other things that are used to classify the different kinds of wood.
Seeds
One of the ways that hardwood can be separated from softwood is by what kind of seed the tree has. In general, hardwood trees are flowering trees. Flowering trees are known as angiosperms, which is a fancy way of saying vessel seed. What this means is that the seeds of hardwood trees are enclosed in something. Some examples would be acorns, fruit, and the covering found on maple seeds. Softwood trees are also called gymnosperms. That means naked seeds. The seeds of these trees don't have the same kind of covering as the hardwood seeds do. They are more often found in cones and can get out of the cone fairly easily.
Leaves
Another way to tell hardwood trees from softwood trees is by their leaves. In general, hardwood trees are deciduous trees. These trees have broad, green leaves. They turn colors in the fall and fall off the trees in the winter. Trees like oak are hardwoods. Softwood trees are coniferous trees, with needles. The needles tend to stay green all year round and don't fall off the trees. Trees like pine would be classified as softwood.
Growth Patterns
Hardwood trees grow slowly. Because they grow slowly, their growth rings are packed tightly together, which gives the wood a tight grain when it is cut. Softwood trees grow much quicker, so their growth rings are much more spaced out. That leads to a looser grain. Those grain patterns help with the density of the wood. A tighter grain pattern will generally mean that the wood is denser, while a looser grain pattern tree will have less density.
If you are doing something with wood, you need to know the difference between hardwood and softwood. You also need to know where you can get the hardwood that you want.
